Principals' Message

Good afternoon Freedom Hill families,

It is a week of much excitement for us "On the Hill". Our in-person kindergarten and Head Start students will be returning to the building and concurrent instruction will begin. Our staff are excited that our extensive preparations will finally yield students returning to us. Despite our many months of all-virtual education, we're so proud that we can continue to engage with our community, whether virtually or in-person. Two opportunities for your family to join us soon include tomorrow with our SCA Eagles Read! event, and next week when author Laura Gehl visits us to celebrate Read Across America week. More information is below.

Here are a few brief updates for families by grade level:

Kindergarten and Head Start - Teacher and days of in-person instruction were emailed to families in November. Our parent liaison will be following up with in-person families on Monday with reminders on days of attendance.

1st and 2nd grade - Teacher placement letters and days of instruction for in-person students were emailed Friday. Please call the front office if you did not receive one.

3rd - 6th Grade - Teacher placement letters and days of instruction for in-person students will be emailed this Friday, 2/26.

FCPS Food and Nutritional Services will be distributing reusable, metal water bottles to children and families who pick up meals from bus routes on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 (while supplies last). The water bottles are intended to provide a refillable container for children to use when they return to in-person instruction. Each water bottle will come with a sticker to label the bottle for easy identification! We encourage all families to stop by and obtain one for their child! Meal kits can be picked up at bus stops found here.

FCPS is working hard to Stop the Spread of COVID-19. Please take a few moment to share this video related to safely returning to school with your entire family. You might wish to share this Social Story created by Sara Delia for Learning at Home or Returning to School with your child depending on your family’s choice earlier in the year.

We hope these resources are helpful. See you soon!

Positivity Project: Cheering Others' Success

This week, we are working on ONE of the FIVE overarching pillars of the Positivity Project. Cheering others’ success is an important test of our character every single day.

“Friends don’t get jealous of each other or begrudge the other for finding success. They celebrate every victory together.”

                                         ~Karen Kingsbury

How to Be Happy for the Success of Others
  1. Be grateful. The root of jealousy is cut off when you focus on the things you DO have, not that you don’t have.
  2. Be inspired instead of discouraged by their success.
  3. Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is different.
  4. Know that your value does not come from external things.

FHES Weekly Update: 2/7/2021

GovDelivery 3 weeks 3 days ago
Principals' Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Today we are writing to you with hopeful news! The Fairfax County School Board has given unanimous consent for some students to begin transitioning back into the school building. We are working closely with the Health Department and county officials to ensure that we are meeting all CDC guidelines and faithful implementing COVID-19 mitigation strategies. We have some important news and dates to share with you this weekend:

Timeline for Return

February 23: Pre-K and Kindergarten in-person students return

March 9: 1st and 2nd Grade in-person students return

March 16: 3rd - 6th Grade in-person students return

Bell Schedule Change

FHES will be shifting to a 9:45-4:15 bell schedule beginning on February 16th. The bell schedule change will apply to both in-person learning as well as students who are doing full-time virtual learning. Teachers will send their families an updated master schedule this week.

New Teacher & Days of the Week Notifications

As we have mentioned, the new bell schedule and return plans require that some students change their teacher. Teacher changes and the two days of the week that students will attend in-person school will be communicated at least one week before your student's grade-level return date.

Resurvey / Change of Choice

FCPS does not have plans to resurvey parents about your selection of virtual or in-person instruction, and a recent communication from Dr. Brabrand reminded families that their choice was for the entirety of the 2020-21 school year. Our regrouping of classes was according to the choices families selected in the Fall. While we will do our best to accommodate change requests, please know that several grade levels are already at or very close to their "max" in-person occupancy based on CDC guidelines.

For those seeking additional information, we will be holding an informational Q&A session this Wednesday, 2/10 at 7PM at this link. Thank you for your continued patience and support as we move forward together.

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Asst. Principal

Positivity Project: Love

Next week, we'll discuss the strength of love. For a 1-page character card overview, click here. Love means you value close relationships with others and being close to people. Love represents the way we think, feel, and behave towards the people with whom we have close relationships. When one person loves another person, that person: comforts and makes the other feel safe; sacrifices on the other’s behalf; supports the other during struggles; and places the other’s needs ahead of their own. If you love a person, that person makes you feel safe and secure. You can be yourself with that person.

FHES Weekly Update: 1/31/2021

GovDelivery 1 month ago
Principals' Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Thank you for your continued support at home as we march into the third quarter of our year. Last week, staff participated in professional development on using the Imagine Learning adaptive reading program. As a school, we are setting a goal of having all students access this program for a minimum of 30-minutes a week to ensure that we are all growing as readers. Our teachers will discuss this with students. If you are having any technical challenges accessing the program, please let your teacher know so that we can support.

As we continue to strive for a successful virtual year, our planning is also beginning for the 2021-22 school year. We are asking that all families complete this intention form (one per child) by January 31, 2021. As you know, FCPS has put a pause on the draft schedule for students returning to in-person learning as well as the update bell schedule. We expect an update this week at the February 2 School Board meeting. The draft plan being proposed by the superintendent is below.

Please keep an eye on your email or on local news in case school delays/cancellations are issued. Wishing you a safe week and hope everyone can have some fun in the snow!

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Asst. Principal

Upcoming Dates for Your Calendar
  • January 31 - Student intention survey due (see above)
  • February 1 - PTA Citizenship Contest Essays Due
  • February 3 - Curbside Library Checkout, 2-6PM
  • February 4 - Kilmer MS Rising 7th Grade Curriculum Night, 6PM
Return to School Updates

The superintendent shared the updated draft return-to-school dates with the School Board on 1/21. This plan will be further discussed at their next meeting on 2/2.

Positivity Project: Integrity

This week, we are focusing on Integrity. You are honest and speak the truth. You present yourself genuinely and sincerely.

“Wrong is wrong, even if everyone is doing it. Right is right, even if no one is doing it.”

                                         ~Unknown

Questions you might enjoy talking about.

  • What does integrity mean to you?
  • When is difficult to show integrity in your day to day life?
  • Why is it important to show integrity in your relationships with others?

From Mrs. Canape:

Hello, and Happy last week of January to our Freedom Hill Staff! Our Positivity Project Team put together this padlet for our students and staff to reflect and connect on what we learned in the month of January. Please feel free to send this link to your kids so they can post messages of their own, and read what other students write about our January Positivity Project Traits!

Congrats Dr. Z.!

Dear Freedom Hill Community Members,

It is with great joy that I present the news that our very own principal has received the award "2020-21 New Principal of the Year" in FCPS Region 2. Dr. Zapadka’s dedication and professionalism were evident from the first day I set foot in Freedom Hill and have not wavered for a single minute. His calming influence as a leader has helped us weather the coronavirus pandemic. By placing an emphasis on a shared enthusiasm for student learning and caring for one another, Dr. Zapadka has helped grow a school ethos driven by wonderful and resilient educators and community members.  Even when presented with his award, Dr. Zapadka was quick to point out the staff, students, and community members who make Freedom Hill a special place to learn and grow. Going forward, Dr. Zapadka will compete with the other Fairfax County regional winners for the title of "FCPS New Principal of the Year". Regardless of the outcome, I am happy to say that I work with an award winning principal every day.

Internet Outages

Good afternoon Freedom Hill families,

There are widespread internet outages being reported in the Northern Virginia area that may be affecting internet access at home. This is not related to a single FCPS tool or a single service provider, though Blackboard Collaborate is currently performing slowest. Generally these issues are resolved quickly -  please check with your internet service provider if you continue to have connectivity issues for an extended amount of time.

We appreciate your patience.

Principals' Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

We hope you are well and enjoying the chilly yet sunny weekend. Our 2nd quarter and first semester have come to a close. Tomorrow is a teacher work day and our staff will be involved with professional development related to return-to-school and providing additional reading supports to students. As we continue to strive for a successful virtual year, our planning is also beginning for the 2021-22 school year. We are asking that all families complete this intention form (one per child) by January 31, 2021.

As you know, FCPS has put a pause on the draft schedule for students returning to in-person learning as well as the update bell schedule, though the superintendent did provide an updated proposal this week. It can be viewed below. While these plans won’t be solidified until the February 2nd School Board Meeting, we wanted you to have this information on your radar. We will communicate with grade level families directly after timelines are confirmed, so please be on the lookout for more information. We will continue to keep you informed as soon as we have information.

Lastly, we have included a variety of webinar links below related to supporting students at home. We encourage you to sign up for any that might be relevant for your family. The FCPS Parent Resource Center does a great job facilitating these and providing learning experiences for families.

Wishing you a safe week.

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Asst. Principal

Return to School Updates

The superintendent shared the updated draft return-to-school dates with the School Board on 1/21. This plan will be further discussed at their next meeting on 2/2.

Positivity Project: Helping Others

We hope you're all doing well and enjoying teaching your students about perseverance. Next week, we'll begin learning about the Other People Mindset (OPM) element of Supporting Others When They Struggle.

Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There is a Chinese saying that sums this up: “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.”

From Mrs.

Positivity Project: Perseverance

Hello, Freedom Hill Community! The Positivity Project would love your help with a project for the new year. We would love to hear from your kids about what the traits of the Positivity Project mean to them. Have your child write a sentence, phrase, or draw a picture of what one of the traits for the next month mean to them. Then, take their picture holding what they wrote or drew, and email them to Mrs. Canape at EACanape@fcps.edu . We will share it on News Show the week that that trait is being focused on in our school.

The traits for the month of January are:

January 3-9: Optimism

January 10-16: Prudence

January 17-23: Perseverance

January 24-30: Other People Matter: Supporting others when they struggle.

Thank you!

Mrs. Canape

This week we are studying perseverance. Perseverance means you complete what you start despite obstacles. You never give up. The concept of perseverance can most often be found in one’s active pursuit in overcoming obstacles. Perseverance is a uniquely human characteristic that identifies an individual’s ability to spend long periods of time devoted to a single goal or set of goals.

Principals' Message

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

I hope this finds you and your family safe and well after a very challenging week for our region and our nation. We know the events at the Capitol Building have impacted us all in different ways and we hope you and your child had a safe space to process those feelings if needed. As we enter into the last few weeks of second quarter, we will continue to do our very best to support our students and families during these difficult times. Please contact your child's teacher or counselor if we can provide additional support or resources.

We are bringing you the weekend update a day early to share updates about next week's schedule. As Superintendent Brabrand shared recently, in-person instruction and phase-in plans are currently paused. Community transmission of COVID-19 in Fairfax County remains high. Dr. Brabrand will provide an update on the Return to School plan to the School Board on Tuesday, February 2.

Because we will not be transporting students to school during the pause in our plan, we will not be moving to the new bell schedule on January 12. We will continue to use the current bell schedule and class schedule.

Monday, January 11 is an independent (asynchronous) learning day for students and a teacher preparation day. Morning meeting and asynchronous academics will be provided for students. There are two great reading opportunities available Monday - our Eagles Read! Bedtime Stories Night and a virtual guest author at the Thomas Jefferson Community Library. Please see below.

Wishing you a nice weekend and continued safety,

Principals' Message

Good morning Freedom Hill Community,

From all of us "on the Hill", wishing you and your family a very Happy New Year and start to 2021. We hope this newsletter finds everyone safe after the holiday break!

Our Positivity Project trait of study this week is optimism. It is in this spirit that we enter a new calendar year with our students and community. We are optimistic and hopeful that the pandemic will begin to subside, and that students will be reunited with their teachers in the school building. As we have since last March, our staff deeply appreciates the efforts and partnership of our community and remains open to your feedback. Our doors remain open to assist your family.

As a reminder, the Fairfax County School Board will be meeting on January 5 to discuss return to school plans. Regardless of their decision, our bell schedule will be changing on January 12. Freedom Hill's bell times will be 9:45-4:15. Teachers will send their families an updated class schedule by the end of the week.

Looking forward to seeing you in 2021,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Asst. Principal

Positivity Project: Optimism

Optimism means you expect the best from the future and work to achieve it. It represents a state of hopefulness and confidence about the future (both short and long term). People with this strength are future oriented. They have a positive vision of what the future holds and maintain confidence that they will get there. They keep a positive attitude despite setbacks – and often find ways to convert what seems like an obstacle into a stepping-stone to achieve their goals.

We are delighted to share that Freedom Hill received many nominations for 2020 Outstanding Employee Awards from our community. Thank you so much. Principals' Message

Good morning Freedom Hill Community,

At the School Board Work session on December 10, Superintendent Brabrand presented a revised phased- plan to return all students who have selected the in-person option starting in January, 2021. Staff worked to improve start times and end times for all levels.

Barring any changes to the plan that may be impacted by the pandemic, the following bell schedule will be in place effective January 12, 2021 for both virtual and in- person instruction. This change will occur even if additional students do not return to the building.

Freedom Hill's bell times will be 9:45-4:15.

We feel this plan is a significant improvement and less disruptive over what was presented in the original plan last summer. We understand that changes may present a hardship to some of our families and staff. However, it is the only way we can return all our grade levels to in-person learning, while following the critical guidelines to help keep our students and staff safe.

We wanted to share this information with you before the holidays as we know this will lead to a change in family routines. Additional tentative dates for student return are shown below. The School Board will be voting on health metrics for school return on January 5. Thank you for your understanding.

Wishing you a happy, safe, and relaxing holiday season! We look forward to 2021 and seeing all of the incredible things that our students will continue to achieve through the support of our community.

Happy Sunday, Freedom Hill Community!

We hope you are well and that you students are excited for a fun final week of school before the holiday break. Our wonderful SCA students have created a Winter Spirit Week for us that you will see above. We hope your students are interested in participating. You also should have received an email from your classroom room parent about contributing to a small holiday surprise for our teachers. We'd love to have you participate!

Proposed changes are subject to approval by the School Board during their January 5th meeting. At this time, we will continue to be virtual and if anything should change, FCPS leadership and our administration will convey those updates to you.

Have a great week!

What Does P2 Mean to You? (AM News Opportunity)

We will share it on New Show the week that that trait is being focused on in our school.

The traits for the month of January are:

January 3-9: Optimism

January 10-16: Prudence

January 17-23: Perseverance

January 24-30: Other People Matter: Supporting others when they struggle.

Thank you!

Mrs. Canape

Positivity Project - Self-Control

Next week, we will focus on self-control. Self-control means have the ability to control your emotions and behaviors. You think before you act. Self-control is the act of managing behavior in a way that positively influences goal attainment and living up to standards. Possessing this strength protects people from destabilizing emotional extremes. Those with self-control are able to limit impulsive behavior. They have the ability to experience and navigate difficulty while remaining poised. Self-control does not mean a lack of thoughts, feelings, or impulses; it just means you have command over them.

Inclusive Schools Week

This week is National Inclusive Schools Week. We spend time celebrating inclusion of all students in our community. Freedom Hill teachers will be leading some short discussions on inclusion. Please let your teacher know if you have a topic you'd like to contribute!

This Virtual Classroom has a variety of resources that you may wish to share with your children this week.

Positivity Project - Words and Actions Matter

This element means that everything we do, say, text, tweet, snap, or post can positively or negatively impact other people. According to research from McKinsey & Co, “the typical American hears or reads more than one hundred thousand words every day.” Think about that for a moment: 100,000 words every single day. Now, stop and ask yourself, “Are the percentage of words someone else hears or reads from me helping or hurting that person?” As Rachel Wolchin says, “Be mindful with words. A string of some that don’t mean much to you may stick with someone for a lifetime.”

Our actions can also have ripple effects long after we make them. Deeds highlighting our character – such as forgiving a sibling, being present and enthusiastic about a colleague’s presentation, or kindly holding the elevator door for a stranger – can impact the people we love, work with, or even just bump into on the street. Through your actions you have the power to make somebody happy, sad, inspired, or discouraged. And, always remember, our words and actions are our choices to make.

SEPTA FREE SCREENING  SEPTA (the Special Education PTA) is doing a free movie screening of an impactful movie on restraint and seclusion called "The Kids We Lose" on Dec. 7 from 7:00-9:30 pmThe Kids We Lose is a 90-minute documentary film about the human side of being a child or student with behavioral challenges, and the struggles faced by parents, educators, staff in facilities, mental health clinicians, and judicial and law enforcement professionals in trying to ensure that these kids receive the help they need. The Kids We Lose also exposes the often brutal, inhumane ways in which kids with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges are treated in schools, inpatient psychiatry units, residential facilities, and prisons. Please note the movie is somewhat graphic. If you'd like to learn more about this important topic, check out the trailer here or register for the free viewing here.

Positivity Project - Kindness Week

Kindness means you are generous and you enjoy doing good deeds for other people. Kindness has been a foundation of moral and spiritual life across cultures and religions throughout history. This character strength is grounded in the belief of a common humanity in which others are worthy of care, attention, affection, and compassion. Aristotle defined kindness as, ”helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped.”

Parents of students in grades 2-7 will need to submit the referral form by December 1. Referrals will not be accepted after December 1. For more information about AAP Level IV or the screening process, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/academics/academic-overview/advanced-academic-programs.

Return to School Paused

Dear Freedom Hill Families,

Per Dr. Brabrand's message to the community today, current health metrics have caused FCPS to "pause" return to school for Group 5, which was scheduled to begin tomorrow. Because of this, Kindergarten, Head Start, and intensive needs students will continue with virtual instruction this week. The return date is TBD at this time.

Here are a few additional, important pieces of information:

  • All grade levels will return to our original daily schedule. Our new schedule will be paused until Group 5 returns.
  • Kindergarten students whose teacher changed will continue with their new teacher tomorrow, 11/17.
  • Groups 1-4 students (Ms. Witt's class, Ms. Winkler's class, and Ms. Qian/Mrs. Sakkas's Monday classes) will continue to come to school.
  • Preparation days for Grades 1 and 2 teachers will remain unchanged. Students will participate asynchronously today, 11/16, 11/20, and 11/23.

As our area continues to see an increase in COVID-19 diagnoses, we encourage our families to take all precautions and to make safety a priority. By working together we can make our school community a safer place. We are thinking of everyone and hope to see you soon!

Dr. Z.

Gracias,

Dr. Z.

Continental Math League

This will be a virtual club, and all 4th, 5th, and 6th graders are invited to attend.  It will be held each Thursday morning from 8:30-9:10, starting November 19th.  Please fill out this form if your child(ren) are interested in joining this club!
