FH Weekly Update - 11/7/21

GovDelivery2 weeks 5 days ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We hope you are well! A moment that many of us have been waiting for has arrived - community clinics and local pediatricians have started administering the COVID-19 vaccine to children ages 5-11. FCPS asked local pediatricians to talk about some of the questions families have about the vaccine. In this short video we learn how the vaccine works and its safety.

This week, we are excited to share that our Book Fair is finally returning! Ms. Trott has been hard at work developing a new schedule to keep us safe inside while also offering some weekend times next Saturday (at the same time as our outdoor Green Team work session). On Thursday we celebrate Veterans' Day. We are thankful for our school community and family members who have served, or are currently serving our country. FCPS has scheduled a 2-hour early release for Veteran’s Day.

Additionally, on Monday we are having our first lunches for our Soaring Eagles Citizenship Award winners for first quarter. Each teacher selected two students to be recognized based not on academic performance, but rather on exemplary showcasing of our Positivity Project traits. These students have been models for their peers and contributed to our wonderful school culture. They will be invited to eat lunch with the principals and school counselors, and will receive a variety of prizes. Thank you to Mrs. Coleman and Ms. Hill for organizing this great recognition program.

We have extended our parent support SignUpGenius through November. We are hoping to continue our optional outdoor lunches as long as the weather remains mild and will allow students to bring their jackets outside. Thank you for your support!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Positivity Project: Bravery

Individuals with this strength may be described as:

  • Courageous
  • Valorous
  • Heroic

Individuals with this strength may act, feel or say the following things:

  • I would prefer to try and fail, than never to have tried at all.
  • Doing what is right is the most important thing
  • I know what I am afraid of and take action to overcome my fears.

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela

FH Weekly Update - 10/31/21

GovDelivery3 weeks 5 days ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We hope all are well as our first quarter of the school year comes to an end (and in style with Harvest Spirit Week)! We'd like to say a very big "THANK YOU" to our families, teachers, and students for everyone's collective efforts to make this a great start to the school year. Our community continues its traditions of kindness, positivity, understanding, hard work, and engaging learning each week. We are so proud!

This week, students will be on holiday on Monday and Tuesday as our teachers conduct conferences, prepare progress reports, and plan for the second quarter. Our front office will be open from 8:30-12:00 on both days. Don't forget that Tuesday is Election Day! If you have not already, it is a great time to introduce your child to one of the foundational tenets of democracy through voting. Best wishes to our families celebrating Dia de los Muertos and Diwali this week.

On Wednesday, we have School Picture Makeup Day for any students who missed our first date.

We have extended our parent support SignUpGenius through November. We are hoping to continue our optional outdoor lunches as long as the weather remains mild and will allow students to bring their jackets outside. Thank you for your support!

Tuesday’s news that an FDA panel has recommended Pfizer’s low dose vaccine for children ages 5-11 brings hope that we can add another layer of prevention for children during this pandemic. As we await a final decision, please know that Fairfax County Public Schools and our community partners including the Fairfax County Health Department, Inova Health System, and local pediatric groups, are working together to ensure that every family who wishes to vaccinate their children ages 5-11 will have access to the vaccine. For the latest information on our vaccination rollout plans, visit our website.

Federal Impact Aid Form - Please Return!

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid by November 5. Returning this form is really important, because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all FCPS schools - but only if you complete the form.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the boxes in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 5. All results are confidential

Watch this video to learn more about the Federal Impact Aid Form.

Positivity Project: Perspective

This week, we are focusing on Perspective. You appreciate that people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.

Our dismissal time will be at 2:10pm on this day.  There are student holidays on Monday, November 1st and Tuesday, November 2nd, while teachers are conducting parent teacher conferences.  We hope you have signed up for a time to connect and partner with your child’s teacher.

Last week, Superintendent Scott Brabrand presented the School Board with FCPS’s plans for the rollout of COVID-19 testing and vaccinations for our students aged 5-11. The combination of screening testing and the expansion of vaccination to elementary school students are both aimed at keeping schools and offices safe places to learn and work this year. FCPS will continue to provide updates, so stay tuned for more communication.

Finally, we have extended our parent support SignUpGenius through November. We are hoping to continue our outdoor lunch as long as the weather remains mild. Thank you for your support!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Federal Impact Aid Form - Please Return!

FH Weekly Update - 10/17/21

GovDelivery1 month 1 week ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We had another busy week of learning! It was great to see many families at our PTA meeting earlier this week. We are so grateful for our supportive PTA Board and all the parent volunteers. Our school and community partnership is one of the things that makes Freedom Hill a great place! And speaking of which, we are still in need of families to sign up to assist with our outdoor lunches!

On Friday, October 29, we will have an optional Book Character School Spirit day, which is the culminating day of our Harvest Spirit Week (see below).  Students may dress up as their favorite book character. If your child chooses to participate in this spirit day, please ensure that they have a school appropriate costume- including no weapons or full face masks. Protective masks covering the mouth/nose are still required.  Hats will be allowed but many not fully cover the head and face.  Students will be dismissed two hours early at 2:05 that day.

Teachers will be meeting with parents as the quarter ends to discuss each student's progress and goals for the remainder of the year. Many teachers have already begun their first quarter conferences/family check ins.

We hope to see you at Spooky Movie Fun Night on Friday!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

FH Weekly Update - 10/3/21

GovDelivery1 month 3 weeks ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

Fall has arrived! We are starting to enjoy the changing of the leaves, the cooler temperatures, and much fun and learning (and lunch) inside and outside of the building. Our staff and students continue to do a wonderful job following our health mitigation strategies and keeping one another safe. We have a few brief thank yous this week:

  • This week is Custodian Appreciation Week. Our dedicated crew of Salvador, Rosalina, Vilma, and Esther have been working overtime to keep our school clean and safe with many extra responsibilities this year. They also prepared our school with Herculean speed this summer after our many summer school programs ended within hours of the first day of school. If you or your student would like to drop off a thank you card or item, we would be happy to pass it along to them. We will be honoring them with a luncheon on Thursday.
  • Thank you to our many families who have contributed to making our outdoor lunches a success! Many have made donations for furniture/seating or volunteered their time as a lunch chaperone. With donations we were able to order an additional tent and tables that will arrive soon.
  • Thank you to our parents and PTA for organizing our upcoming October events. You can see information below on Enrichment programs, Walk/Bike to School Day, and Spooky Movie Night! Mr. Curtis and the Green Team will also be working on the garden next Saturday and would love to have your help! See more information below.

A brief reminder from our front office - if you need to make a transportation change for your student at the end of the day, please contact our front office by 2:00. This allows our staff to be fully focused on dismissal. Thank you!

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

FH Weekly Update - 9/19/21

GovDelivery2 months 1 week ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

It was another great week on "The Hill!". Our students have established routines thanks to their own hard work as well as the encouragement of our teachers and staff. They have been doing a wonderful job boarding and dismissing from buses, completing fire and other emergency drills, utilizing safe behaviors in the cafeteria, and wearing their masks each day.

We wanted to make you aware of a change in COVID notification. If we have a positive COVID case at FH, we've been asked to notify the community on Fridays via email through the eNotify system. We will continue to contact families directly if their child has been identified as a potential close contact to a positive COVID case.

Finally, with cool weather we hope to begin outdoor lunch this week. Finalized grade-level schedules will be sent to you before we begin. We will begin with one grade level per lunch as we learn routines and build confidence with seating and distancing. We are asking for community support in two areas:

  • If you are able to volunteer an hour of your time on a specific day, please use this SignUpGenius to join us as an outdoor chaperone. We are hoping to have a volunteer for each time slot.
  • We had a generous community partner donate outdoor tables for us, but we'd love to have some additional seating. Please let us know if you are willing to donate or lend outdoor tables/chairs to our students.

Thank you to everyone who attended our first PTA meeting this week! We look forward to seeing you soon.

In partnership,

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

The health and safety of our families is our utmost priority. Here is some information from FCPS that gives tips on how to stop the spread, as well as explains the process we use when there is a positive case.

Our Health and Safety Guidance Webpage has the most current information about our layered prevention strategies, what happens if your child becomes ill at school, and the process when there is a pause in instruction or activities after a positive COVID case.

Yesterday's newsletter contained the incorrect time for our PTA Back to School Picnic. It has been updated to reflect the correct time (5:30-7:30)

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We hope you and your family had a spectacular and safe 4-day Labor Day weekend. On their Twitter page, our PTA shared this brief post about the history of Labor Day - you may wish to share it with your children.

As we begin our third week of school, we wanted to share how impressed and proud we are of our students and staff this year. Mr. Kopacz and I have been able to stop by all the classrooms, visit with the students at lunch, and see them shine during specials. We appreciate our parents’ support in the daily symptom check prior to sending children to school. If you are ever unsure if your child may attend in person, please call our health clinic or reach out to us directly. We are in this together for the safety of our students!

And finally... we need your help! We hope to begin outdoor lunches for students now that our weather has improved. We are looking for parents who are willing to assist staff supervising outdoor lunch. If you are available on certain days of the week, please complete this form. We will send you additional details.

We look forward to seeing you at our Back to School Picnic on Friday!

Wishing you a wonderful week, and Shanah Tovah to our families celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

FH Weekly Update 8/29/21

GovDelivery2 months 4 weeks ago

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

We'd like to thank our students, staff, and families for helping to make our return to school week successful and memorable this year. The halls and classrooms were buzzing with positivity, engagement, and learning. Our students are forming friendships and connecting with their teachers each day. Despite our absence from the building last year, our students quickly learned our many routines, like how to quickly transition outside for a fire drill and to eat safely in the cafeteria.

As we continue into our second week, we ask for your continued vigilance at home as you check your students for health symptoms each day. If your student is unwell, please help us to keep our community safe by keeping them home and taking them for a test.

This week we have included some important information in the newsletter. Please see below for health information, news on Back to School and AAP Information Night, and for ways that you can get involved and join our amazing PTA. We look forward to seeing everyone at our Back to School Picnic!

New Wall!

Check out our new wall! Thank you to the 6th grade class of 2020-21 for the wonderful gift to our school. It was completed by artist Zack Winfrey.

Did you know...?

That our art teacher, Mr. A., is a graduate student studying Art Education? He is excited to be incorporating new techniques in our art classes this year. Here's Mr. A. with his new sketch of Bernini's David.

Schoology - New to FH

Freedom Hill is excited to launch our new learning management system: Schoology. Schoology is a learning space that enhances face-to-face and distance learning through communication, collaboration, and personalized learning.

Teachers can use Schoology to post their classroom materials online; to provide a safe forum for students to discuss their ideas and collaborate on projects; and to assign and collect homework electronically. It helps students stay organized and it keeps the class connected.

Parent Accounts

A Schoology Parent Account gives you access to:

  • Your child’s classes.
  • Your child’s upcoming assignments.
  • School, class, and group announcements.

To access Schoology, parents will need to have an active SIS/ParentVUE account.

More information on how to login and use Schoology is available online

Health & Safety Guidance

The health and safety of our families is our utmost priority. Here is some information from FCPS that gives tips on how to stop the spread, as well as explains the process we use when there is a positive case.

FCPS Health and Safety Guidance Webpage

Our Health and Safety Guidance Webpage has the most current information about our layered prevention strategies, what happens if your child becomes ill at school, and the process when there is a pause in instruction or activities after a positive COVID case.

Flow Chart for Notification of a Positive Case

We know the pause process is frustrating and sometimes confusing for families. The flowchart below is posted to the FCPS website and explains the exact process FH, FCPS, and the Fairfax County Health Department use to identify and notify close contacts after a positive case.

Flowchart outlining process for students identified as a close contact

COVID Dashboard

All FCPS COVID-19 cases are reported via a dashboard posted to the FCPS website and updated daily. While this does not outline the number of students quarantining, it has tabs showing total number of cases, cases by school and cases by date.

FH Back to School Update

GovDelivery3 months 1 week ago
Welcome to School Year 2021-22!

Dear Freedom Hill Community,

It is time to launch into another great school year! The staff at Freedom Hill have been working diligently to prepare a welcoming, safe environment for students and families. As we return to the building this year, we look forward to re-establishing traditions and celebrating our togetherness. Our goals for the beginning of the year are like each school year – to know each child by name and by need, and to provide learning opportunities that allow our students to develop the skills they will need to make their dreams a reality.

This year, special steps will also be taken to mitigate current health risks and to keep our students safe. More information on mask requirements and other health-related updates are shared below.  As noted in FCPS communications, all school will start the school year with universal masking in all FCPS buildings. Masks will be worn indoors at all times during the school day by both staff and students with the exception of when eating.

Classroom teacher assignments were mailed from the school today and should arrive soon. In addition, we look forward to hosting families on August 20 for our annual Open House. Times are listed below, and we have assigned times by last name to promote social distancing and more time to speak with teachers. If you have several students, you are welcome to attend both sessions if needed to stop into each classroom.

We encourage our new and returning families to read this newsletter each weekend, making special note of the "Upcoming Dates" section below. We also feature updates from our wonderfully supportive and enthusiastic PTA at the end of each newsletter.

We look forward to continued partnership this year!

Nicholas Zapadka, Principal

Eric Kopacz, Assistant Principal

Freedom Hill is looking for a new Cafeteria Host/Hostess to be paid to support lunch daily for our students. This is an hourly position from 10:45 AM – 2:00 PM daily. This is ideal for a stay at home parent or a college student who has a few hours available to join us each day. If you or someone you know is interested, please email Kelly Harris or call our front office.

Calling All Laptops!

This school year students will be assigned a laptop. The FCPSOn program, https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcpson, is designed to transform learning and prepare our students with real-world technology skills.

Mr. Fenton is busy organizing devices for our students. We need your help. There are still devices from last year that have not yet been returned. Perhaps you used the device for our summer programs. Perhaps you forgot to return the device in June. We need all devices returned to prepare for our upcoming school year. You may return any Freedom Hill technology to our building between 9:00 – 3:00 daily. Thank you for your help as we prepare for another great year.

Bus Delay Notification System  and the Transportation page.

As we prepare to begin the 2021-22 school year, FCPS is aware of your questions and concerns about the Delta variant of the COVID-19 virus. The health and safety of our students, staff, and community are the school system’s highest priority and every day we are working closely with health officials to review our layered prevention strategies and ensure our schools and buildings are safe places to learn and work. Vaccination levels among 12-18 year olds are high and we will continue to offer vaccination opportunities in our schools. We are also using universal masking as a key mitigation strategy as we gear up to start the school year five days in-person. We look forward to welcoming you back on August 23.

Masks

Masks are an essential tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting those unable to be vaccinated. To ensure a safe start to the school year, masks will be required for everyone, regardless of vaccination status, inside FCPS buildings.

As we bring large numbers of students and staff back to buildings, FCPS is committed to doing all we can to provide a safe environment for everyone to learn and work. Therefore, existing mask requirements have been extended to include everyone, regardless of vaccination status and location. We will all wear masks indoors, unless we are alone in an office or room. Outdoor masking is still recommended for those who are unvaccinated.

There are some situations in school when students and staff are permitted to remove their masks, including:

  • When actively eating or drinking (if eating indoors, individuals are required to put their masks back on when not actually eating or drinking)
  • When outside (e.g. outdoor recess, outdoor physical education, outdoor instructional groups; anyone not fully vaccinated is recommended, but not required, to wear a mask in crowded settings)

While FCPS is unable to implement full physical distancing in our schools with the return of 99.5% of our students, we will implement it to the best of our ability when space permits.

Cafeteria

Students will be required to wear their mask to the cafeteria, through the lunch line, and while seating and not eating. We will assist our student in learning the process of removing a mask only to eat. In addition, several proactive measures are being taken at Freedom Hill to mitigate risks associated with lunch:

  • Expanded cafeteria seating onto our stage to promote increased distance
  • Additional tables in the cafeteria to promote increased distance
  • Plexiglass utilized on tables to protect against transmission
  • Outdoor seating for some students (weather, temperature, and staffing permitting)
Screen for Illness Every Day, Stay Home When Sick

One of the most important prevention strategies guidelines is screening students daily for any signs of illness prior to leaving home for school. Any student who is ill or has COVID-like symptoms should remain at home. The daily health screening questionnaire and all translated versions can be found on our Health and Safety Guidance webpage

This document provides the details of the policies and protocols related to COVID-19, and it is continually updated to align with public health guidance as it evolves during the school year. Daily completion of the health screening is done on an honor basis and does not need to be sent to the school.

Read more about checking for symptoms and how to prepare to return to school after illness.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Measures will be implemented to ensure that common areas and equipment, and personal workspaces, are regularly cleaned and sanitized. The Office of Facilities Management has worked closely with FCPS custodians to adjust their cleaning processes to better address current considerations.

FCPS custodians are using effective disinfectant and sanitizing products to clean our facilities every day. For more detail about cleaning and disinfecting in schools, see the Health and Safety Guidance Document.

Hand Hygiene and Respiratory Etiquette

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Ventilation

FCPS uses mechanical ventilation systems to provide classrooms with outside air. FCPS schools are designed to ventilate fresh outside air and mitigate the buildup of odors and pollutants. Fresh air is filtered and conditioned before it enters the space. This is in line with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus that advises windows be opened in the absence of outside mechanical ventilation.

Contact Tracing and Quarantining

In the event of a COVID-19 exposure, FCPS will work with the Fairfax County Health Department to conduct contact tracing and determine if quarantining is necessary. Further guidance is coming on this topic soon.

Monitoring by Health & Safety Teams

This year, FCPS will be using an independent third party firm to perform safety team observations. Safety teams will observe and report on the health and safety mitigation measures in schools and make sure they are being implemented with fidelity.

In preparation for a strong return to 5 days of in person instruction,  we will also continuously monitor our community health conditions as well as adhere to FHD, VHD and CDC guidance.

Conditions for Potential Temporary COVID-19 Closure

FCPS is committed to continuity of learning during the 2021-22 school year and the school division is using layered prevention strategies to do everything possible to ensure our schools remain safe, healthy and open.  We do, however, have plans in place to ensure continuity of learning in the event health authorities require a temporary closure to protect the health of students, staff, and the community. Read more about protocols.
